PAGC Media Release: PAGC says federal wildfire funding announcement repackages old money, calls for risk-based allocations to northern First Nations
PAGC received only $500,000 of nearly $42M distributed nationally, despite being in one of the highest wildfire risk regions in Canada. This year alone, the Canadian Red Cross registered about 15,000 evacuees in Saskatchewan — about 75% from PAGC Nations including Lac La Ronge Indian Band and Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, not counting those from Montreal Lake Cree Nation who received support from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency.
Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte is calling for risk-based, community-led funding that respects Treaty rights and provides direct investment in equipment and training so First Nations firefighters can action fires in their territories.
