Prince Albert Academy of Learning staff and students have been busy hosting fundraising events since September 2006 for two charitable projects: Operation Christmas Child and Children’s Haven.

In Operation Christmas Child, a portion of the proceeds were used to purchase items that were put in shoeboxes which have now been sent to needy children in South America, Africa and other places overseas. The remaining portion will be donated to Children’s Haven.

This is the third year that the Academy has been involved with the shoebox campaign in Operation Christmas Child. In the first year, 249 shoeboxes were sent out. In 2005, 550 shoeboxes were sent out along with monetary donations to purchase goats for families, start careers for young girls, and to purchase medicine and school supplies. In each of the first two years, and this year, a good portion of the proceeds and toys were donated to Children’s Haven.

This year, on November 14, the Academy of Learning again invited participants to a fundraising event in which each individual donor of $4 was invited to have a piece of cake and enjoy the celebrations as they watched the shoeboxes being loaded onto an ambulance by staff and students.

The 60 students, and 5 staff started the fundraising drive in September by selling raffle tickets for a Glen Scrimshaw print that they obtained by donating money last year to Children’s Haven. They also held 50/50 draws as well as their 3rd annual Pizza Day on October 19th during Education Week. In total, they raised upwards of $5000.

This money enabled them to purchase items to create 620 shoeboxes to be sent overseas to needy children. The Academy also donated $3100 in cash to Operation Christmas Child. A monetary donation will also be made to the Children’s Haven. They surpassed last year’s total of 550 boxes and would like to thank everyone who purchased raffle tickets, bought pizza and look forward to doing it again next year.
