Bobby Bird Memorial Scholarship Awards

The 15th annual Bobby Bird Memorial Scholarship Awards were presented to 6 deserving PAGC School students from Grades 7-12 on October 24, 2006. The awards were presented in conjunction with the PAGC Annual Assembly held at the Senator Allan Bird Memorial Centre in Prince Albert.

The 6 students nominated by their schools’ teachers and guidance counselors had to be First Nations members from PAGC Bands, and their performance was based on the 2005-2006 academic year. Students in Grades 10 – 12 needed official Saskatchewan Education transcripts.

The criteria considered included: academic achievement, effort, attendance, athletics, First Nations language, special talent/activities, traditional/cultural skills, and community service.

The presentations were made by family members of the late Bobby Bird, PAGC Vice-Chief Edward Henderson, and Larry Goldade, PAGC Director of Education.

The monetary value of the awards are as follows: Grade 12 – $1,500.00; Grade 11 – $1,000.00; Grade 10 – $800.00; Grade 9 – $500.00; Grade 8 – $500.00; Grade 7 – $500.00.

This year’s award winners are:

  • Grade 7: Roberta Beatty, Kimosom Pwatinahk Collegiate – Deschambault Lake, SK
  • Grade 8: Stanley J. Roberts, Nihithow Awasis School – Grandmother’s Bay, SK
  • Grade 9: Reid Charles Finley, Churchill High School – La Ronge, SK
  • Grade 10: Raymond MacDonald, Father Porte Memorial Dene School – Black Lake, SK
  • Grade 11: Vincent Bird, Montreal Lake School – Montreal Lake, SK
  • Grade 12: Lesley Anne Ballantyne, Kimosom Pwatinahk Collegiate – Deschambault Lake, SK
The scholarship awards were established by the family of the late Senator Allan Bird in honor of the late Bobby Bird, who was actively involved in First Nations politics. He served his people as Councilor of the Montreal Lake Reserve, Vice-Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, and as a supporter of educational programs for First Nations Youth.
